Located in the fast growing Wynyard Quarter, Auckland’s new state-of-the-art performing arts facility is a fantastic example of modern sustainable design being blended with traditional theatre requirements, and yet still creating an amazing building.
Comprising a 675-seat, international standard theatre, bar, café, gallery space and lounge, the ASB Waterfront Theatre is a purpose-built venue and the home of Auckland Theatre Company. Alongside Moller/BVN architects, a very complex design created entirely in Revit allowed eCubed to fully coordinate all aspects of the building services.
eCubed changed the architectural approach to the fly tower external with the lighting team working at length to create a fully back lit façade system with only 150mm depth available.
The redevelopment of the quarter has breathed new life into this historic area and opened up a new side of Auckland for its residents and visitors. The new theatre has added an extra dimension to the waterfront, and substantially contributes to the 'after five economy'. Aucklanders and visitors are able to enjoy dinner, a show, a stroll along the waterfront and much more, all within easy reach of the CBD.
The new theatre meets two of the transformational shifts to ensure Auckland becomes the world's most liveable city by 2040. The first shift is to 'substantially raise living standards for all Aucklanders and focus on those most in need'.
The new theatre delivers to the structural change required to shift to "new economy" industries in long-term, sustainable, high-growth sectors, and substantial improvements in peoples’ educational achievement and skills. It also delivers to 'radically improve the quality of urban living'. ASB Waterfront Theatre displays architectural and spatial design excellence, in one of the city's best assets - the waterfront.
